Vanessa Selbst Claims Maiden WSOP Victory

By News Provider
June 13th, 2008

Vanessa Selbst is the first woman to win a WSOP bracelet at this year’s WSOP after claiming victory in the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha Event 19. Taking the chip lead into the final table, Vanessa Selbst held onto to win her first ever WSOP title and a $227,965 payday.

A total of 759 players had entered the event in Day but at the start of the final table the chip stacks were as follows:

Vanessa Selbst - 1,047,000
Jamie Pickering - 329,000
Stanley Statkiewicz - 318,000
Thomas Schultz - 144,000
Eugene Todd - 127,000
Mel Randolph - 117,000
Craig Natte - 108,000
Jamie Robbins - 70,000
Ken Lairson - 16,900

Unsurprisingly it was Ken Lairson out first, his short stacks barely lasting a few hands as Selbst cleaned up. Next to be eliminated was Jamie Robbins, who came up short against Jamie Pickering. Mel Randolph and Craig Natte then followed in quick succession to leave just five players left to fight for the title.

Selbst then saw off Eugene Todd, and Thomas Schultz to further increase her chip lead. Down to three players, Stanley Statkiewicz had increased his chip stacks to draw level with Selbst but then found himself all-in against her flopped flush. He was out in third place to leave heads-up between Selbst and Pickering.

After some dramatic and entertaining heads-up play, with both players taking the chip lead at different stages, it was Vanessa Selbst who eventually won the title, her straight proving too much for Pickering’s hand.

Final Standings:

Vanessa Selbst - $227,965
Jamie Pickering - $145,459
Stanley Statkiewicz - $88,062
Thomas Schulz - $72,004
Eugene Todd - $59,053
Mel Randolph - $46,621
Craig Natte - $36,261
Jamie Robbins - $28,490
Ken Lairson - $20,720
