June 6th, 2008

Thang Luu held on to the chip lead to claim victory in the 1,500 Omaha Hi-Low Split 8 or Better event, the sixth event of this year’s WSOP. It is his first ever WSOP win in his fourth final table appearance, in what became the largest Omaha Hi-Low field in WSOP history with 833 entrants in total.

After yesterday’s long day’s play with finished up in the early morning hours, the final table looked like this:

Thang Luu - 640,000
Chris Falconer - 331,000
Greg Jamison - 275,000
Mark Wilds - 225,000
Spencer Lawrence - 222,000
Scott Clements - 220,000
George Guzman - 195,000
Craig Sabel - 160,000
James Pritchard - 155,000

First out was Scott Clements, James Pritchard’s full house proving too strong. Mark Wilds chips had dwindled down until he found himself all-in on the small blind. George Guzman’s full house finished off Wilds’ hopes of survival.

Next to be eliminated was Craig Sabel, followed shortly after by Greg Jamison, and Chris Falconer. With four players left fighting it out, James Pritchard became the next player to leave the final table, Thang Luu’s kings holding out. Once George Guzman was out in 3rd place, it was time for heads-up play between Luu and Spencer Lawrence.

But it was to be Thang Luu’s day and his full house of kings full of sevens eventually sent down Spencer Lawrence. Luu takes home $243,356 for his first place finish, as well as his first ever WSOP bracelet.

Final Standings:

Thang Luu - $243,356
Spencer Lawrence - $156,343
George Guzman - $93,806
James Pritchard - $78,456
Chris Falconer - $64,243
Greg Jamison - $50,598
Craig Sabel - $39,228
Mark Wilds - $30,700
Scott Clements - $22,172
