June 11th, 2008

The first and only sole ladies event of this year’s World Series of Poker has been completed, with Svetlana Gromenkova collecting her first major title and first WSOP bracelet. She defeated Anh Le in heads-up play, who unluckily was also runner-up in 2005 to Jennifer Tilly.

The final table at the start of play looked like this:

Svetlana Gromenkova - 553,000
Christine Priday - 448,000
Patricia Till - 312,000
Debbie Mitchell - 224,000
Sue Porter - 211,000
Yesenia Garcia - 210,000
Anh Le - 191,000
Marla Crumpler - 163,000
Roslyn Quarto - 73,000

Sue Porter was first to be eliminated, her pair of aces just short of Roslyn Quarto’s two pairs of ace and kings. Marla Crumpler’s jacks then knocked out Yesenia Garcia’s tens. A while passed until the next elimination as the players took turns winning pots of each other. Eventually it was Quarto who was next to go, out in 7th place to Chris Priday’s two pair.

Debbie Mitchell then ran into Gromenkova’s triple jacks, while Marla Crumpler failed against Anh Le’s aces. With four left to play, it was Chris Priday who would fall next, her A 7 not enough against Anh Le’s A J. Once Patricia Till was eliminated in 3rd place, it was down to heads-up between Anh Le and Gromenkova.

The title came down to Gromenkova’s K K against Anh Le’s A 6. A flopped king brought Gromenkova triple kings and the title of Ladies No Limit Hold’em World Champion.

Final Standings:

Svetlana Gromenkova - $224,702
Anh Le - $144,702
Patricia Till - $73,637
Christine Priday - $87,715
Marla Crumpler - $60,000
Debbie Mitchell - $47,106
Roslyn Quarto - $36,277
Vesenia Garcia - $28,155
