Philip Tom is 2008 WSOP Event 11 Winner
June 10th, 2008
Philip Tom has claimed Event 11 of the 2008 WSOP with victory over Greg Mueller in the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout event. Phil Tom takes home $477,990 in prize money as well as a WSOP bracelet.
With 360 entrants to the event on Day 1 creating a total prize pool of just over $1.6 million, the competition was fierce from the start. Last year’s event was won by Don Baruch in a final table including Daniel Negreanu and Erick Lindgren.
After two days of gruelling play the final table was set. Six players would be up against each other to fight for the title. As the event is a shootout, all six players began the day with $1 million in chips.
The line-up:
Greg Mueller
Leo Wolpert
Sirious Jamshidi
Philip Tom
Thomas Roupe
Tim West
It took a few hours of play at the final table for the first elimination, Thomas Roupe first being crippled by Greg Mueller’s pocket nines, and then being knocked out by Leo Wolpert’s ace. Next to go was online star Tim West, whose pocket nines wasn’t enough to help keep him in the competition.
Soon after Sirious Jamshidi was eliminated by Philip Tom, and when Leo Wolpert was sensationally knocked out by Mueller’s 2 on the river, it was heads-up between Mueller and Tom.
Philip Tom was all-in and when Mueller called, his J 8 never got ahead of Tom’s A J and Philip Tom was the new champion, taking $477,990 with him along with his golden WSOP bracelet.
Final Standings:
Philip Tom - $477,990
Greg Mueller - $298,638
Leo Wolpert - $187,812
Sirious Jamshidi - $118,440
Tim West - $63,450
Thomas Roupe - $38,070
