Nenad Medic Becomes First Winner of 2008 WSOP

Nenad Medic has become the first winner of a 2008 WSOP bracelet after winning the $10,000 World Championship Pot Limit Hold’em event. It is the first time the 25 year old Canadian has won a WSOP golden bracelet, despite four previous cashes at the WSOP.

Going into the final table Andy Bloch, runner up in this year’s NBC National Heads-Up Championship, was the chip leader by a huge distance, holding almost twice as many chips as next the next player, Nenad Medic.

The action started straight away in the first hand with Patrik Antonius’ triple kings taking a huge pot off Phil Laak’s triple jacks, and soon after Laak was eliminated with his jacks again not enough to overcome Nenad Medic’s aces.

Mike Sowers was next to go, with Mike Sexton’s pocket queens proving too strong. Patrik Antonius lasted only one hand longer coming up short against Andy Bloch’s ace, with Chris Bell out next falling to Medic’s triple jacks, and Bloch next outing Amit Makhija in 5th place.

With only four players remaining, Andy Bloch still held almost twice as many chips as the next player, but by the time Mike Sexton was eliminated by Kathy Liebert, Nenad Medic had taken over as chip leader. Medic then took care of Kathy Liebert to leave heads-up play between him and Andy Bloch.

After dominating the heads-up play, Nenad Medic finally managed to put Bloch all-in. With a flop of 8 (Hearts) 5 (Spades) 4 (Hearts) Medic held the flush draw with 5 (Hearts) 7(Hearts) against Bloch’s 9(Hearts) 9(Diamonds). The next card was the jack (Hearts) and Medic had his flush. The final card was the 5(Clubs) which wasn’t good enough for Bloch.

Nenad Medic takes home his first WSOP bracelet as well as $794,112 in prize money.

Final Standings:

Nenad Medic - $794,112
Andrew Bloch - $488,048
Kathy Liebert - $306,064
Mike Sexton - $248,160
Amit Makhija - $198,528
Chris Bell - $157,168
Patrik Antonius - $124,080
Mike Sowers - $99,264
Phil Laak - $74,448
