June 23rd, 2008
Jesper Hougaard has claimed his first WSOP victory with a battling heads-up performance against Cody Slaubaugh in the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Event #36. Along with $610,304 in prize money, Jesper Hougaard also takes home the renowned golden WSOP bracelet.
With a massive 2,447 entrants to the event, two days of intense poker came down to the final table of nine players:
Jesper Hougaard - 1,582,000
Cody Slaubaugh - 1,419,000
Danny Wong - 1,105,000
Rick Solis - 900,000
Justin Wald - 873,000
Owen Crowe - 674,000
Doug Middleton - 356,000
John Shipley - 269,000
Aaron Kanter - 165,000
John Shipley was the first to leave the final table, the pocket jacks of Cody Slaubaugh edging the hand. Danny Wong’s flush then saw off Owen Crowe’s triple aces, before Rick Solis was out to Jesper Hougaard’s flopped flush.
Another flush saw the end of Justin Wald’s participation, while Doug Middleton lost out to Hougaard’s pair of threes to leave only four players remaining. Danny Wong was then on the wrong side of Hougaard’s flopped flush (again) to leave three players standing. Aaron Kanter’s elimination then saw heads-up play begin between Slaubaugh and Hougaard, with Hougaard holding a 7:1 chip lead.
Eventually Hougaard put Slaubaugh all-in and his triple queens held up to give him victory and the WSOP title. Slaubaugh does go home with $389,128 as a consolation prize.
