Lee Markholt Wins World Poker Challenge

By News Provider
March 31st, 2008

At the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino in Reno, Lee Markholt won the 2008 WPT World Poker Challenge. Markholt had previously cashed out 14 times in his career without ever making a finals table. However he made the most of making his first final table by claiming the title and a first place prize of just under $500,000.

Starting the final table in 2nd place on chip stacks to Jason Potter, Markholt made the first play of the day eliminating Jeff Dewitt and taking the chip lead with it. David Pham couldn’t improve on last year’s 3rd place finish at this event, and was next to go.

Chip leader at the start of the day Jason Potter was next to be eliminated, coming up short against Zachary Hyman, before Hyman himself was knocked out by Bryan Devonshire.

The heads-up play between Devonshire and Markholt lasted just 2 hands, and Markholt was able to finally celebrate his first WPT title, a $493,815 prize, and a $25,000 guaranteed seat at the WPT World Championship in April at the Bellagio, Las Vegas.

Final Standings:

Lee Markholt                 $493,815

Bryan Devonshire         $271,625

Zachary Hyman             $149,862

Jason Potter                 $103,030

David Pham                    $93,664

Jeff Dewitt                    $84,297
