Kwaysser Takes Home $274,000 from the LAPT in Costa Rica
May 29th, 2008
Hungarian poker pro Valdemar Kwaysser from Budapest has walked away $274,000 richer from the casino in San Jose, Costa Rica, after winning the Latin America Poker Tour. Kwaysser took down the three day event, beating 398 players from 35 different countries for the top prize.
Second place finisher Max Steinberger of the United States took home $144,773 after his J9 failed to stand up against Kwaysser’s pair of aces in the final heads-up hand.
The tournament attracted a host of celebrities, including US talk show host Montel Williams, Major League Baseball star Orel Hershheiser, and David Wells and Sam Simon, co-creators of the Simpsons. Representing the poker professionals were the likes of Daniel Negreanu and Isabelle Mercier.
“The inaugural Latin American Poker Tour event in Rio was a phenomenal success, but this second event in San Jose has topped all our expectations,” said LAPT President Glenn Cademartori. “We were expecting a robust field of players full of enthusiasm, but having nearly 400 players turn up is truly overwhelming.”
The Final Standings of the LAPT San Jose were as follows:
Valdemar Kwaysser Hungary - $274,103
Max Steinberg USA - $144,773
Steven Silverman USA - 106,167
Alex Soderland Sweden - $77,212
Alec Torelli USA - $57,909
The next and final stop for the first season of the LAPT will be held in Punta del Este in Uruguay, beginning August 7th.
