Congressman Nadler Becomes 48th Co-Sponsor of Frank’s Bill
April 8th, 2008
New York Congressman, Jerrold Nadler, has become the 48th and latest co-sponsor of Congressman Barney Frank’s Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, which seeks to regulate online gambling in the United States.
A congressional hearing held last Wednesday to review the effectiveness of the proposed UIGEA implementation rules highlighted the inherent shortcomings of the legislation, as well as an apparent lack of understanding of what ‘illegal’ online gambling actually is.
Under the Frank legislation, each Internet gambling operator would be licensed by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and be required to ensure that the individual placing the bet or wager is physically located in a jurisdiction that permits a particular form of Internet gambling.
The legislation would also reinforce the rights of States to control what, if any, level of Internet gambling is permissible within their borders, including the ability to apply additional taxes, and to ensure that appropriate consumer protections and limitations were in place.
Now serving his 9th term in Congress, Representative Nadler speaks for the 8th District of New York, which includes part of Manhattan’s West Side, Lower Manhattan, and areas of Brooklyn.
A respected figure in the House of Representatives, Congressman Nadler is a member of Frank’s House Judiciary Committee, and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
As chairman of the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties Subcommittee, he is an advocate of freedom of expression and respects the rights of individual personal privacy. He also serves on the Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security Subcommittee.
