2008 WPT World Poker Challenge Final Table Decided

By News Provider
March 28th, 2008

After 3 days play the WPT World Poker Challenge event is down to the final table where 6 players will be fighting for the championship and a first place prize of just under $500,000. Just 261 entrants took to the tables at the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino in Reno, creating a prize pool of $1.87million, down from last year’s 425 entrants, perhaps due to the tournament being dropped from the Season VII schedule.

Day 1 chip leader Phil Ivey lost out in his bid to continue his golden streak by failing to reach the final table. In each of the 8 times Ivey has cashed out in an event he has gone on to make the final table. This time he came up short in 10th place.

Amongst the eliminations on Day 1 were Mike Matusow, Tony Cousineau, Lee Watkinson, J.C Tran, Men Nguyen, Gavin Smith and Jerry Yang. By the end 75 players survived to move onto Day 2.

Day 2 saw Brandon Cantu, recent WPT Shooting Stars winner exit the tournament, along with Huck Seed, Arnold Spee, Erick Lindgren and Eli Elezra.  Only 27 players remained with Jason Potter taking the chip lead over Jordan Rich.

Amongst the losers on Day 3 were Jordan Rich, Erik Seidel, Michael Mizrachi and Phil Ivey, leaving Jason Potter the chip lead with Lee Markholt not far behind. Markholt had previously cashed 14 times in his career without ever making the final table.

Chip stacks for the final table:

Jason Potter                $1,156,000

Lee Markholt                $1,137,000

Bryan Devonshire         $674,000

David Pham                   $406,000

Zach Hyman                  $285,000

Jeff Dewitt                   $249,000
