June 4th, 2008

Following yesterday’s marathon play at the second event of the 2008 WSOP culminating in a 6am finish, the 18 players remaining in the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event returned to the tables less than 8 hours later for the final day’s play.

At the start of play the chip stacks were as follows:

Aaron Coulthard - 1,327,000
Theo Tran - 1,199,000
James Akenhead - 1,039,000
Matthew Kearney - 1,024,000
David Bach - 786,000
Eric Hicks - 703,000
Melvin Jones - 660,000
Perry Friedman - 653,000
Minh Nguyen - 600,000
Mike Ngo - 544,000

With players hoping to make it down to the final table of nine, the action was heated from the start. Elia Ahmadian was first to be eliminated, followed by Matthew Kearney, Eric Hicks, and Minh Nguyen.

Following Perry Friedman’s elimination in 11th place, the final table was set for ten players instead of the expected nine. At this stage James Akenhead was the chip leader from Aaron Coulthard and Theo Tran.

Jeff Wiedenhoeft was first to leave the final table, swiftly followed by Joe Rutledge and David Bach. Melvin Jones was next to go, falling short against Theo Tran’s pocket aces. Aaron Couthard was next out in 6th place, with Mike Ngo soon after taking 5th.

Next Theo Tran called Grant Hinkle’s all-in call with triple aces but found it wasn’t enough as Hinkle turned over a full house of aces over fours. Chris Ferguson’s K 10 wasn’t enough to beat James Akenhead’s A 10 and was out in 3rd place leaving heads-up play between Hinkle and Akenhead.

Chris Ferguson had to settle for his 48th WSOP cash (5th on the all-time list) and 27th career WSOP final table (4th on the all-time list).

Grant Hinkle had nearly double the amount of chips as James Akenhead at the start of heads-up play and after some ups and downs, as always it all came down to one hand. Hinkle held 10 (Diamonds) 4 (Diamonds), putting Akenhead’s A (Clubs) K (Hearts) all-in. The flop came down… 10 (Hearts) 4 (Hearts) 10 (Spades), leaving Akenhead shocked and buried. For good measure the turn card came down 10 (Clubs) leaving Hinkle with quad tens and champion of the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event.

Grant Hinkle become the second winner of the 2008 WSOP, and as well as the coveted golden bracelet takes home $831,462 in prize money.

Final Standings:

Grant Hinkle - $831,279
James Akenhead, UK - $520,219
Chris Ferguson - $388,287
Theo Tran - $327,148
Mike Ngo - $268,154
Aaron Couthard - $211,841
Melvin Jones - $158,211
David Bach - $117,987
Joe Rutledge - $83,127
Jeff Wiedenhoeft - $52,021
