Final Table Set at 2008 WPT Spanish Championship
May 28th, 2008
The World Poker Tour has kicked off Season VII of its long running tour with the second annual WPT Spanish Championship in Barcelona.
With a host of poker enthusiasts entering the tournament, competition was tough at the Casino Barcelona. Amongst those taking part in proceedings were Spain’s own Carlos Mortensen (the only player in history to win both the WSOP main event and WPT World Championship), Antonio Esfandiari, Annette Obrestad, Patrik Antonius, and last year’s champion Markus Lehmann.
Day 1 saw a total of 253 players taking to the tables across the two days of play. Notable eliminations during Day 1 included Peter Jepsen, Julian Thew, Bertrand Grospellier, Markus Lehmann, and Juha Helppi.
Day 2 saw 135 survivors from Day 1 take to the tables hoping to make a top 27 placing within the cash bubble. Thiago Nishijima held the chip lead from David Howard at the start of the day but by the end of play only 28 players would remain. Those knocked out included Ram Vaswani, Marc Goodwin, Pete Giordano, Antonio Esfandiari, Annette Obrestad, Martin De Kniff, and Carlos Mortensen.
Guy Sitbon was the new chip leader going into Day 3 but with the stakes getting higher and higher, survival was the name of the game. Those that wouldn’t make it through the day were Patrik Antonius, Raul Mestre, Tore Lagerbord, David Zenou, Nordine Bouya, and Erik Friberg.
The final six players return for the final table with Stefan Mattsson the new chip leader.
Final table standings:
Stefan Mattsson - 1,253,000
Thiago Nishijima - 1,031,000
Casper Hansen - 604,000
Martin Lundenius - 421,000
Guy Sitbon - 351,000
