Canadian Glen Chorny Wins EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final
April 18th, 2008
After 5 days of poker and 842 poker players battling it out at the renowned Monte Carlo Casino, Glen Chorny has won the European Poker Tour Grand Final. With the previous three EPT grand finals won by Americans, this year it was the turn of a Canadian to win the tournament.
The 22 year old Canadian took hold of the chip lead going into the final day’s play and successfully fought off all his challengers to win the final event in the EPT season. Due to prolonged play during Day 4 the final day started with 10 players, two more than the final 8 necessary for the final table.
Chip stacks were as followed:
Glen Chorny - 3,370,000
Isaac Baron - 2,365,000
Michael Martin - 1,579,000
Maxime Villemure - 1,220,000
Denes Kalo - 957,000
Antonio Esfandiari - 735,000
Luca Pagano - 705,000
Valeriy Ilikyan - 650,000
Stig Top-Rasmussen - 590,000
Henrik Gwinner - 466,000
Early on Stig Top-Rasmussen was the first to go, unable to better Valeriy Ilikyan’s hand. Henrik Gwinner was next to be eliminated to leave the final 8 to go onto the final table. Glen Chorny still had the chip lead over Isaac Baron at this stage.
First to leave the final table was Antonio Esfandiari, who couldn’t get the better of Luca Pagano. However, Pagano himself was next to be knocked out, followed by Ilikyan. Michael Martin and Isaac Baron both came out short against Chorny, and when Maxime Villemure was next to go, it left heads-up play between Chorny and Denes Kalo.
With a 10-1 ratio chip lead, it took only 2 hands for Glen Chorny to win his first EPT title, and the €2.02 million first place prize.
