2008 WSOP $10,000 World Championship Main Event Starts Today
July 3rd, 2008
The 2008 World Series of Poker is ready for the start of the prestigious $10,000 World Championship Main Event which kicks off later today in Las Vegas.
The event will begin with Day 1 split into four days of action, and Day 2 split into two days of action. Day 3 until Day 7 will be played daily with the final table set on July 14th.
For the first time, the $10,000 World Championship Main Event will see the final table delayed until November, to be shown on live primetime television. Previously the tournament finished in July with a tape delayed television offering shown in November, however the 15-member player advisory council have agreed to the change in order to create a bigger hype for the final.
In what is the world’s richest and most prestigious gaming tournament, the WSOP Main Event is the highlight of the 55 events on offer in the WSOP series, with thousands of amateurs and poker pro’s alike expected to take part with hopes and dreams of glory.
The usual cast of poker aficionados will be taking their seats at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, including the likes of Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey, both of whom are still seeking their first bracelet win of this year’s series.
Among the more successful players of this year’s series hoping to make a move in the Main Event will be Erick Lindgren (with five WSOP cashes already this year) Barry Greenstein (six cashes), Jacobo Fernandez (seven cashes), and Daniel Negreanu, David Singer and Chris Ferguson (all with five cashes also).
Last year’s main event saw 6,358 entrants creating a prize pool of just under $60 million, with Jerry Yang winning the coveted title and a massive $8.25 million first place prize.
