2008 WSOP $1,000 No Limit Hold’em w/Rebuys Event 5 Day 1

The start of the fifth event of this year’s WSOP saw some of the biggest poker players in the world entering the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em w/Rebuys event.
With hopes of capturing the elusive golden WSOP bracelet were Gavin Smith, Greg Raymer, Johnny Chan, Erick Lindgren, Ted Lawson, Jeff Lisandro, Lee Watkinson, as well as Event 1 winner Nenad Medic.
In total 766 players took the tables at the start of the day, but only 106 would survive the day. Some of those who didn’t make it included T.J Cloutier, Dario Minieri, J.C Tran, Men Nguyen, Freddy Deeb, and Greg Mueller.
With a total of 2,258 rebuys in the event, the prize pool was totalled a whopping $2.89 million, with the top 72 finishers guaranteed a cash prize, and top prize earning $636,736.
Others not to make it through to Day 2 included Jamie Gold, Mike Matusow, Vanessa Rousso, Alex Kostritsyn, Gavin Smith and Steve Sung.
By the end of play Phil Ivey had nudged ahead to take the chip lead from Amit Makhija. However with Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Billy Baxter and Michael Binger still in the field, anything could happen as play heads into Day 2.
